I love the story of Joseph found in Genesis 37 – 50 in the Old Testament, because of the wonderful family reconciliation in the end between Joseph and his brothers. The sibling jealousy sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt, but the Lord had a special plan for Joseph. He turned what was meant for evil into good. Joseph suffered in Egypt going to prison for a wrongful accusation by Potifar’s wife. The Lord used Joseph’s time in prison to build his character and prepare him for God’s plan. In the face of so much adversity Joseph remained faithful to the Lord.
Joseph was also put in charge of all the prisoners in preparation for God’s purpose later on.
While still in prison, Joseph interpreted two fellow prisoner’s dreams which came true. They were Pharaoh’s Cup Bearer and Baker.
Some years passed with Joseph still in prison, when Pharoah had a dream which nobody could interpret. The Baker finally remembered Joseph’s gift of interpreting dreams. Pharaoh sent for Joseph and he interpreted the dreams to mean that there were going to be 7 plentiful years, followed by 7 years of famine throughout Egypt, but also Canaan, where Joseph’s family lived.
Pharoah immediately ordered Joseph be released from prison and put in charge of everything, second only to Pharoah. The Lord suddenly turned Joseph’s bad circumstances around for good. Joseph persevered with the Lord in spite of his enslavement in Egypt and suffering in prison.
Joseph adeptly managed all the grain storehouses in preparation for the famine. So much grain was collected during the 7 plentiful years that Joseph lost count.
The famine brought Joseph’s brothers to Egypt to buy grain but they did not recognise Joseph. Eventually, once Jacob made the journey to Egypt, Joseph revealed his identity to his family and there was much weeping. A wonderful time of forgiveness and reconciliation took place. Joseph explained to his brothers that the Lord’s plan was to bring him to Egypt for the purposes of the Lord’s provision during the famine. What they meant for harm, the Lord changed for their good and the good of the nations.
Joseph was faithful to the Lord and maintained his integrity, even though he was betrayed by his brothers, enslaved in Egypt and tempted by Potifar’s wife. The Lord’s sovereignty was paramount in Joseph’s life. Despite the trials and tribulations he faced, Joseph recognized that God was ultimately in control of his life. Even when subject to betrayal, slavery and imprisonment, Joseph didn’t give up on the Lord. At the right time the Lord put Joseph in a position of power to enable him to protect the nations from 7 years of severe famine.
Lord I pray that we would be just like Joseph in persevering through difficulties, knowing that you, our Sovereign Lord, are going to bring about a change for our good and we will be blessed more than we could imagine, just like Joseph. Lord Jesus, our precious Lord, give us the courage and strength to continue persevering knowing that you will come through for us in the end.
Such a wonderful bible story – Joseph, the Lord’s faithful servant, reconciling with his brothers and the Lord saving the people from a potential catastrophe.
